Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can I make two supplied dry cups of hard porridge?
Yes. Hard porridge permits 0.5–2 cups on S18U, using the hard water scale; this is distinct from ordinary white-rice quantities.
Explore this need in the finder →Can the same two cups use the soft-porridge method?
No. The S18U soft-porridge maximum is 1.5 supplied cups; the hard maximum cannot be borrowed.
Explore this need in the finder →Can I use four dry white-rice cups underneath a prescribed tacook side dish?
Yes. The large combined range is two to four supplied cups, without the finish timer and with the prescribed food quantities.
Explore this need in the finder →The Tiger JBV-S18U combines a larger rice pot with the S series' timed programs and tacook plate. It suits a household whose regular rice loads begin at two supplied cups and whose side-dish meals need two to four cups below the plate. It also offers useful porridge quantities below that two-cup rice minimum, making the chosen menu as important as the overall cooker size.
Ten cups is the white-rice ceiling
The US manual specifies two to ten supplied cups for white rice without the cooking plate. Brown rice is two to six, Multigrain two to eight, mixed rice two to six and sweet rice two to five. A level supplied cup is approximately 180mL, or about 150g for white rice. Those are uncooked amounts; finished portions depend on the grain and the meal.
This configuration is useful for a household making several rice cups at a time. It is less suitable if most dinners need one cup, because that falls below the documented minimum of its ordinary white and brown programs. The S10U starts at one cup and keeps the same broad style of controls, at lower maximum quantities.
Added ingredients can tighten a menu's limit. The manual's brown-rice guidance, for example, reduces the maximum to five cups when other ingredients are added. Check the actual recipe rather than treating the six-cup plain-brown limit as a universal permission for every seasoned mixture.
The larger porridge range is a distinct reason to choose it
Hard porridge permits 0.5–2 supplied cups, while soft porridge permits 0.5–1.5. This means a half-cup porridge preparation is documented even though a half-cup ordinary white-rice batch is not. Likewise, two cups of dry rice can fit the hard-porridge method but exceed the soft-porridge maximum.
For someone preparing breakfast porridge for several people, those numbers can matter more than the ten-cup white-rice label. Use the correct hard or soft water scale and the menu's preparation directions. The manual allows a porridge cooking-time setting from 40 to 90 minutes in five-minute steps and warns that prolonged warming changes its texture. It is a prepare-and-serve dish, not a reason to extend holding just because the display shows elapsed warm time.
Two saved finish times, on eligible programs
Timer 1 and Timer 2 retain desired completion times. Quick, Porridge, Brown and Multigrain can use that feature. Plain/Synchro-Cooking, Mixed•Sweet, Slow Cook and Steam cannot. Set the present time first, allow the minimum program-specific lead time, and follow the manual's limit on how far ahead a timer may be set.
The rice shape is relevant. Tiger directs short-grain white rice to Plain/Synchro-Cooking and recommends Quick for long-grain white rice. A plan to schedule short-grain rice therefore does not fit merely because scheduled Quick rice does. Similarly, the plate meal cannot borrow timer support from the separate Brown or Porridge program.
For a household wanting a simpler panel and no scheduling, the A18U supplies the same two-to-four-cup combined range. The S18U is the stronger fit when its actual porridge, separate Steam or eligible-menu timer functions will be used. Its extra menu labels should correspond to real meals, rather than an expectation that every function works with every other one.
Serve the plate meal before using rice holding
The supplied tacook plate cooks prescribed side dishes above two to four cups of rice. This is a smaller maximum than rice-only cooking. Preparing six cups of rice for guests requires leaving out the plate, cooking the side dish elsewhere or choosing another documented configuration.
Use the cookbook's ingredient quantities and do not crowd or mound the food. Ingredients that expand or release significant liquid need particular care under the manual's guidance. Once the cycle ends, remove the hot plate level, serve its food and loosen the rice. Do not leave the plate inside during Keep Warm or put it back after removal.
Separate Steam uses a five-to-60-minute setting, while Slow Cook has a five-to-180-minute range. Those functions require their own water amounts and loading limits. They do not turn the rice dry-cup figure into a volume allowance for stew or authorize arbitrary pressure-cooking recipes.
Space, coating and everyday suitability
The manual lists approximately 11.86 inches wide, 15.09 deep and 10.05 high with the lid closed. Allow more space for opening, steam and lifting the loaded plate. The S18U uses microcomputer-controlled direct heating and is made in Japan. Its nonstick aluminum pot and all removable accessories require hand washing; protect the coating with a soft sponge and clean the steam-control cap after use.
Choose this model for larger ordinary rice batches, the expanded porridge ranges and prescribed two-to-four-cup plate meals. Choose S10U for one-cup ordinary rice, or compare the Zojirushi NP-HCC18 when induction heating and a larger brown-rice range are the priorities. Keep the S18U's menu and timer boundaries in the decision: its useful versatility comes from several distinct methods.
