A useful fit for

Best for small 1-3 supplied-cup white-rice batches, automatic warming and a pop-up tray that can steam a suitable side in the same cycle.

The main tradeoff

Brown-rice batches stop at two supplied cups; simultaneous steaming caps rice at two cups, and there is no delay timer or separate Steam menu.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can the ARC-863CGU make three supplied cups of white rice without exceeding a nine-inch body-width limit?

Yes. The exact manual supports one to three supplied cups of white rice, and the manufacturer lists an 8.66-inch body width. Leave extra operating room for the cord, lid and escaping steam.

Can the ARC-863CGU make three supplied cups of brown rice?

No. The exact manual lists at most two supplied cups of brown rice; the six-cup cooked headline is not a dry-brown-rice capacity.

Can I use its documented grain table for quinoa without requiring a named quinoa program?

Yes. The manual gives a quinoa method and a maximum amount, but does not state a minimum or provide a separate quinoa menu. A quantity-specific match therefore remains unconfirmed until the amount is known to fit the exact recipe.

Can the ARC-863CGU steam a suitable side while it cooks two supplied cups of white rice?

Yes. The exact manual documents simultaneous rice cooking and Pop-Up steaming up to two uncooked rice cups. A three-cup white-rice batch exceeds the combined-method limit even though it fits the rice-only plan; check that the side food is fully cooked.

Aroma ARC-863CGU review: small-batch rice with a useful pop-up steamer

The ARC-863CGU is a compact, single-switch cooker for modest portions, not a six-cup-dry-rice machine. Aroma’s 6-cup headline is cooked yield: its exact manual lists one to three of the supplied rice cups of uncooked white rice, or one to two cups of brown rice. Three white cups make about six cooked cups; two brown cups make about four. The included cup is three-quarters of a standard U.S. cup. That difference should settle the size question before the bonded-granite coating or steamer catches your eye.

Capacity and cooking rhythm

For a regular white-rice batch of one, two or three supplied cups, the manual maps the amount to the matching water line and estimates about 18–23 minutes at one cup, 20–25 at two, and 25–30 at three. Brown rice is slower and has a lower ceiling: one cup is listed at about 31–36 minutes and two at 42–47. Aroma calls these estimates and notes that kitchen conditions affect timing; they are not independent cooking-test results.

The simple switch begins cooking and the cooker automatically moves to Warm when the cycle ends. There is no delayed-finish timer, recipe scheduling or dedicated rice-menu selection. The manual also limits food on Warm to 12 hours. That makes the ARC-863CGU most at home with a small fresh batch and a normal serving window, rather than a household that needs rice to finish at a set time or stay held all day.

The pop-up tray changes the useful batch limit

The included steam tray and ring can be set inside the pot or raised above it; the tray nests for storage. Aroma’s page presents it for meat and vegetables while grains cook below. The manual is more important for planning: when steaming and cooking rice together, do not exceed two supplied cups of uncooked rice, even though a rice-only white batch can reach three. It starts the steaming method with two supplied cups of water and warns against opening the lid mid-cycle. The food still needs to be checked for doneness; the cooker does not turn the tray into a timed second cooking zone.

So a buyer who mainly wants one or two cups of rice plus a suitable side can get more use from this small pot than its cooked-yield number suggests. If you need the maximum three-cup white-rice batch, use the rice-only plan instead. The questionnaire treats “tray included” and “rice plus steaming in the same cycle” as separate choices for exactly this reason.

A small countertop footprint, with one material claim to keep in perspective

Aroma lists the closed body at 9.06 inches high, 7.87 inches long and 8.66 inches wide, with a listed weight of 2.54 pounds and 300 watts at 120 volts. Leave extra room for the cord, steam and opening the lid rather than treating the width figure as a full operating-clearance recommendation. The pot is described as ceramic-coated Bonded Granite. Aroma says the surface is PFAS-free and more scratch-resistant than its traditional ceramic coating; that is the maker’s claim, not a longevity test. The exact manual says the inner pot and accessories can be hand-washed or placed on the top rack of a dishwasher, while the cooker body is wiped clean. A one-year limited warranty is listed.

Who should choose it—and who should step up

Choose the ARC-863CGU if your ordinary batch is one to three supplied cups of white rice or one to two of brown, you value an automatic Warm switch-over, and the pop-up tray would simplify a small meal. It also has a manual grain table for couscous, rolled oats and quinoa, but those are charted methods rather than named programs; the manual does not state a minimum amount for those grains. In particular, a charted quinoa recipe is not the same promise as a dedicated quinoa button, and a rolled-oat row does not establish a steel-cut oatmeal program.

Look at the larger digital Aroma ARC-1296C instead if you routinely need more dry rice, a finish timer or more menu control. Its exact manual allows up to six supplied cups of white or brown rice, versus the ARC-863CGU’s three-white/two-brown split. The two cookers answer different routines: this one saves counter space and keeps operation simple; the digital model is a better fit for larger scheduled batches. Neither comparison is a claim that one will cook more evenly in a home test.
